Alcoholic formalin is the ideal fixative for laboratories in colder environments or for samples in freezer storage. It is used to promote rapid penetration and coagulant fixation without lysis of erythrocytes, and its neutral pH between 6.8 and 7.2 promotes the preservation of delicate tissue structures.
Our B-5 fixative is made in the traditional formulation containing mercuric chloride. It is considered the gold standard for immunohistology testing, particularly for detailed analysis of bone marrow, tissues of the spleen, and lymph nodes when lymphomas are suspected. This product comes in a kit containing one pre-measured vial of B-5 fixation and one vial of 37% formaldehyde to be mixed thoroughly before application.
Bouin’s solution is a versatile fixative that contains bright yellow pigmentation properties. It is a popular choice for fixing embryonic studies and skin, due to its excellent preservation and illumination of protoplasmic elements such as nuclei and chromosomes. It may be used to decalcify bones with the addition of formic acid, a combination that is delicate enough to preserve the boney tissue for several days or weeks. It may also be used to for adipose rich tissues when 25% ethanol is added.
Buffered zinc formalin is often used as a safer substitute for B-5 on tissue samples of the spleen, bone marrow, and breast. It is compatible with a wide range of staining agents, and its zinc chloride compound increases the rigidity of the cellular elements as to prevent brittle sectioning during staining and processing procedures. For best results, first fix the specimen with NBF.
